Artists Appreciate the Art of Restoration and Discover the Emerging Gallery
During the annual plein air organized by the “artCēsis” association, 12 professional artists are working in Cēsis. “This summer, the artists are getting to know the Cēsis Museum. On its centenary, we want to explore it ourselves and create a dialogue between the eras,” says the association’s leader, Inese Ciekure.
The participants of the “art Cēsis” plein air became acquainted with the accomplishments of the first development phase of the Konrāds Quarter—specifically, the restoration of the artwork “Mācītāja māja.”
Meanwhile, during archaeological excavations in the basement of the Konrāda kvartāls Draugu nams, an ancient castle defensive wall was uncovered. This centuries-old discovery will be transformed into a living work of art within the upcoming gallery—a place where artists from around the world will be able to exhibit their creative works to a broader audience.

“They are here and doing something for Cēsis—we want to be here and contribute to the city too. The theme of our plein air resonates with the Konrāds Quarter’s concept: to uncover the old, showcase it, and use it today,” emphasizes R. Ivanovs. The artists acknowledge that spending a week in Cēsis during the summer makes it evident how much the city has changed. “The city is growing; every summer I notice something new. When living here, you don’t see it,” says J. Dukāts, adding that Cēsis has always set a high standard as a cultural city. “If there are ideas, they should be implemented.” Compared to Kuldīga, one advantage of Cēsis is its proximity to Riga—you can visit for the day and explore.
“Ambitions are important. You need a self-defined goal and the determination to follow that path,” says R. Ivanovs about Cēsis as Latvia’s Cultural Capital in 2025. L. Bikše adds, “Cēsis has what it takes to shine.”

Ritums and Laima are native to Cēsis and, at least during the plein air, spend the week painting in their hometown. “For a week, I’m a Cēsis local again. I studied at Rozentāls School and the Art Academy, and gradually drifted away from Cēsis. Through the plein air events, I’m slowly returning,” Laima shares. She lives and works in Germany and Italy but always makes time for the Cēsis plein air. Meanwhile, Ritums has set up a workshop—a summer residence—in his father’s house, allowing him to work during the summers.
In the second half of August, an exhibition at the Cēsis Exhibition Hall is planned, showcasing works from different “artCēsis” seasons. These works will reflect the lightness of summer, emotions, and colors seen and felt in Cēsis.
