Autumn Twilight at Cēsis Medieval Castle

As the sun sets behind the walls of Cēsis Castle, the mighty fortress will come alive with activity unusual for an autumn evening. Candle lanterns will glow in the towers; hammers, saws and chisels will resound through the artisans’ workshops; firewood will crackle in the bread oven and hearths; medieval music will fill the courtyard; and the doors to the castle’s cellars and towers will be thrown open to welcome visitors after dark.

The evening will begin with the opening of a new exhibition, Cēsis Castle: Time and People, on the third floor of the Western Tower. Contemporary in design and visually refined, the exhibition explores pivotal moments in the castle’s history and the choices made by people who have shaped its fate over the course of eight centuries.

The nearby Konrāds Quarter will also be immersed in medieval twilight. The gallery of the Friends’ House will host a new exhibition entitled Finds, featuring artefacts uncovered during archaeological excavations in the quarter—many of them six or even seven centuries old. Throughout the evening, archaeologist Laura Lēģere will introduce visitors to these finds and the discoveries made during the excavations.

Warming drinks and one of the most spectacular views of Cēsis Castle will await evening visitors on the courtyard terrace of Konrāds House.
